    The short answer

Both advertise less than a working setup. Instantly sells sending at $47 and data as a second plan, bundled at $94. Smartlead sells sending at $39 with warmup a $59 add-on, so $98. Instantly never meters mailboxes or warmup; Smartlead lifts contact caps at volume.

    Key takeaways

    • Instantly unbundles data and Smartlead unbundles warmup, so the comparable entry points are $94 and $98 rather than the advertised $47 and $39.
    • Instantly carries unlimited email accounts and unlimited email warmup on every tier, including the $47 Growth plan.
    • Smartlead lifts the contact cap entirely from Unlimited Smart at $174 upward and includes the warmup pool free at that tier and above.
    • Instantly Hypergrowth carries 125,000 emails monthly at $97 but caps uploaded contacts at 25,000, so heavy list churn hits its ceiling before its send limit.

Instantly vs Smartlead: Which Cold Email Platform Should You Actually Use?

These two platforms advertise $47 and $39 and both of them are quoting you for less than a working cold email setup. Instantly's $47 covers sending, with its lead database sold as a second $47 plan. Smartlead's $39 covers sending, with its warmup pool sold as a $59 add-on. Price what you would actually run and the entry points are $94 and $98, four dollars apart, for opposite reasons.

    The short answer

Pick Instantly if mailbox count is your constraint. Unlimited email accounts and unlimited email warmup sit on every tier including the $47 Growth plan, so a pool of forty sending mailboxes costs what a pool of four does.

Pick Smartlead if send volume is your constraint. Its Unlimited Smart tier at $174 carries 150,000 email sends with unlimited contacts and a free warmup pool, and Unlimited Prime at $379 carries 500,000 sends plus three SmartServers with OAuth for teams that want private sending infrastructure.

The two platforms are far more alike than the marketing suggests. What separates them is which line item they chose to unbundle, and that turns out to decide the invoice more than any feature does.

Both of them unbundle something, and it is not the same thing

    Pricing comparison

Light Speed$358/mo$286.30/moeverything in Hypergrowth plus 500,000 emails monthly and 100,000 uploaded contacts
    EnterpriseContact salesnot publishedcustom volume

The part that is easy to miss: that ladder prices sending only. Instantly's lead database is a separate plan on the same page, Growth Credits at $47/mo for 1,500 Instantly credits against a database published as 450M+ B2B leads, stepping to Supersonic at $97 and Hyper Credits from $197. The page bundles the two entry plans as Starter at $94/mo. So a team that wants Instantly for both sending and data is looking at $94, not $47.

Smartlead's unbundled line is warmup. The pricing page lists the warmup pool as a $59 a month add-on against Base and Pro, and as free against the two Unlimited tiers. Warmup is not optional in cold outbound, so on the lower two tiers that $59 belongs in the platform price.

A worked example at three shapes of team

Here is an invented but arithmetically honest worked example. The three teams are made up to isolate the two constraints that actually move the price. No part of it comes from a customer, and every rate is published.

    TeamInstantlySmartlead
    Small, 5,000 emails a month, own list, 10 mailboxesGrowth, $47Base $39 plus warmup $59, $98
Small, 5,000 emails a month, needs data, 10 mailboxesGrowth plus credits, $94Base plus warmup $98, data bought elsewhere
    Large, 120,000 emails a month, own list, 40 mailboxesHypergrowth, $97Unlimited Smart, $174

Three readings come out of that.

A small team with its own list is the clearest case on the page: $47 against $98, because Instantly bundles the thing Smartlead unbundles and the team does not need the thing Instantly unbundles.

A small team needing data lands at $94 against $98 plus whatever a data provider costs, which makes Instantly the cheaper answer for the second time and for a different reason.

A large team reverses it in Instantly's favour again on the published numbers, because Hypergrowth carries 125,000 emails monthly at $97 against Unlimited Smart's 150,000 sends at $174. The honest caveat is that Hypergrowth caps uploaded contacts at 25,000 where Unlimited Smart does not cap them at all, so a team churning through large lists rather than sending repeatedly to a smaller one hits Instantly's ceiling first.

Where the two feature lists actually differ

Every claim below is about what a vendor lists on its own page. Both of these platforms sequence, warm, rotate inboxes and report, so the interesting rows are the structural ones rather than the checkboxes.

    Instantly lists
    • Unlimited email accounts on every tier
    • Unlimited email warmup on every tier
    • A 450M+ B2B lead database sold as a separate credits plan
    • Waterfall work email enrichment across 5+ providers
    • An AI reply agent and unified inbox from the Scale bundle up
    • Access to several large language models, or your own API key
    • Private infrastructure at the Light Speed tier
    Smartlead lists
    • A warmup pool, free on the Unlimited tiers and a $59 add-on below them
    • Unlimited contacts from Unlimited Smart upward
    • Verified prospect email allowances from 2,000 to 170,000 by tier
    • SmartServers with OAuth on Unlimited Prime
    • A client workspace model aimed at agencies
    • API and webhooks on every paid tier
    • A machine-readable pricing document addressed to AI agents
What each vendor lists on its own page. These are list-membership claims, so a capability both products have can legitimately appear on both sides.

The two genuine structural differences are the ones the pricing already told you. Instantly refuses to meter mailboxes or warmup and meters data instead. Smartlead meters contacts and warmup and offers private sending infrastructure at the top. Everything else on those lists is table stakes that both of them clear.

    Who should pick which

    Instantly or Smartlead
    • Yes: You run mailboxes in double figures and warmup cost worries you. Pick Instantly, where both are unlimited on every tier.
    • Yes: You churn through very large lists rather than resending to a small one. Pick Smartlead, where Unlimited lifts the contact cap.
    • Depends: You want private sending infrastructure. Both offer it: Smartlead SmartServers on Prime, Instantly at Light Speed.
    • Depends: You need a lead database inside the platform. Instantly sells one as a credits plan; price it at $94 not $47.
    • No: You are comparing the advertised prices only. Stop, and add $59 to Smartlead Base or Pro for the warmup pool.
    • Yes: You send more than 125,000 emails a month. Instantly steps to Light Speed at $358; Smartlead Unlimited Smart is $174.
Six questions that decide this pair. Mailbox count and send volume pull in opposite directions.

    Switching between them

    Email warmup process visualization

These are the two platforms teams most often move between, usually after hitting one of the two ceilings above.

Warmup continuity is the risk, not the data. Both connect mailboxes over OAuth or SMTP and both hold your list in a way you can export. What does not export is the sending pattern each mailbox has built. Connect the mailboxes on the new platform and let warmup run for about a week in parallel before moving live campaigns, so no mailbox goes quiet and then loud.

Rebuild suppression deliberately. Repliers, bounces, unsubscribes and booked prospects do not travel inside a contact export. Pull them explicitly and load them as an exclusion list before the first send on the new platform.

Check which meter you are about to hit. Moving to Smartlead below Unlimited means a contact cap of 2,000 or 30,000 and a $59 warmup line. Moving to Instantly means an uploaded-contact cap of 1,000 or 25,000 and a separate credits plan if you wanted the database. The failure mode in both directions is buying the tier that matches the old platform's headline price rather than the one that matches your actual volumes.

Do not port a long sequence just because you had one. A migration is a good moment to ask whether the follow-up steps were earning their place.

Where each sits in a cold outbound stack

    Platform comparison

Both are the sending layer, and the sending layer is not where campaigns are won.

A cold outbound stack does four things: choose the companies, find the people, get the message into an inbox, handle what comes back. Instantly reaches into the second job through its credits plan and the third through unlimited mailboxes and warmup. Smartlead concentrates on the third and goes furthest on it, with private sending servers at the top of its ladder.

How we run campaigns narrows what either is asked to do. One message per prospect per campaign, no bumps and no thread replies, so the multi-step sequencing both sell largely goes unused. That makes mailbox capacity and deliverability the deciding capabilities rather than the sequence builder, and it is why Instantly's refusal to meter mailboxes reads as a bigger advantage here than a feature table would suggest.

A second consequence worth stating: because the first message is the whole campaign for a given prospect, warmup is not a nice-to-have you can defer to month two. That is exactly why Smartlead's $59 add-on belongs in the entry price. For the surrounding budget see the cold email pricing guide, and for the field beyond these two, the sending tool roundup.

    The decision, in one paragraph

    Feature comparison

Add the unbundled line before you compare anything. Instantly is $47 for sending and $94 with data; Smartlead is $98 for sending with warmup until you reach Unlimited Smart at $174, where warmup becomes free and contacts become unlimited. For a team with its own list, Instantly is cheaper at every published volume up to 125,000 emails a month and never meters mailboxes or warmup, which is the thing that matters most when volume comes from many inboxes sending modestly. Smartlead earns the switch when your contact churn passes what Instantly's uploaded-contact caps allow, or when you want private sending servers under the whole operation.

    Questions

    Frequently asked questions.

    Frequently asked questions
Which is actually cheaper, Instantly or Smartlead?
For a team with its own list, Instantly, at every published volume up to 125,000 emails a month. Its $47 Growth plan includes unlimited mailboxes and warmup, while Smartlead Base at $39 needs the $59 warmup pool to do the same job. The comparison only favours Smartlead when your contact churn exceeds Instantly's uploaded-contact caps.
Is Smartlead's warmup really an add-on?
On the Base and Pro tiers, yes. Smartlead's pricing page prices the warmup pool at $59 a month against those two plans and lists it as free on Unlimited Smart and Unlimited Prime. Since warmup is not optional for cold outbound, the honest entry price of the platform is $98 rather than the advertised $39.
Do I need Instantly's credits plan?
Only if you want its lead database. The $47 outreach plan covers sending, unlimited mailboxes and unlimited warmup; the credits plan is a separate $47 purchase giving 1,500 credits against a database published as 450M+ B2B leads. A team that already sources and enriches elsewhere can ignore it entirely.
Which is better for a large mailbox pool?
Instantly, clearly. Unlimited email accounts and unlimited email warmup sit on every tier, so forty mailboxes cost the same as four. That matters more than it looks, because sending volume in cold outbound comes from many mailboxes each sending modestly rather than from a few sending hard.
