    Hunter's pricing page lists a Free plan at 50 credits a month, and a note beside it that verifying an email costs half a credit. Those two lines together are the honest answer to what a free email finder gives you: a small monthly allowance, spent on whichever mix of finding and verifying you choose, and then a paywall.

    The word "unlimited" does appear in this market, and it is usually true about something other than the thing you want. Understanding which part is unlimited, and which part is capped, is the difference between a workable free workflow and an afternoon spent hitting a limit you did not know was there.

    The listicles ranking for this query treat free as one property. It is at least four, and they fail at different points.

    A monthly credit grant. The most common shape. You get an allowance, it resets, and finding and verifying draw from the same pool. Hunter's published plan comparison puts credits at 50 on Free, rising to 2,000 on Starter, 10,000 on Growth and 25,000 on Scale, and states that credits are used for Email Finder, Email Verifier and Domain Search alike. A grant is genuinely free and genuinely small.

    Unlimited search, capped export. This is where the word usually earns its keep. You may run as many searches as you like and look at the results, and the number you can get out of the tool in a usable form is limited. For anyone building a list this is a cap on the only step that matters, since a result you cannot export is a result you cannot send to.

    A free tier of a paid product. A trial in everything but name, designed to be spent. Nothing wrong with it, but the allowance is sized to demonstrate the product rather than to do a month of work.

So the small buyer pays about four times the per-check rate of the largest, and both figures are a small fraction of a cent.

    Against that, a paid database lookup is priced per credit rather than per fraction of a cent, and the gap is large enough that it changes the design rather than the budget. Hunter's plan comparison makes the relationship visible inside a single product's own accounting: its credits are spent by Email Finder, Email Verifier and Domain Search alike, and the page states that verifying an email costs half a credit. A find costs a whole one. Check your own providers' rate cards for the cash figure, because published per-credit rates move and several vendors do not render a price into a page you can read without an account.

    That ratio is the entire reason this approach works: verification is cheap enough that you can afford to be wrong most of the time.

    A worked example, and the numbers here are invented to show the shape rather than measured on any real list. Take 1,000 people.     Read your verifier's billing terms before deciding how widely to guess

    One clause decides how many candidates per person you can afford, and it differs between verifiers.

    MillionVerifier's prices explainer states that "you only pay for good and bad emails and not for risky (unknown and catch-all) emails", and claims to be "the only email verifier not charging you for catch-all emails either". Its homepage frames the same commitment slightly differently, as a "Risky Email Refund" offering a full refund on any email the service cannot verify with certainty, alongside "Catch-All Included" advertising catch-all verification at no extra cost. Both surfaces are the vendor's own and they are worth reading together rather than picking one.

    The practical effect either way is that inconclusive checks do not carry their full cost, which makes generating four or five candidates per person cheaper than the arithmetic above assumes. If your verifier bills every check regardless of verdict, the calculation inverts: generate fewer candidates and rank them by likelihood first. That single line in the terms is worth more than any headline rate.

    Accept-all domains. Some mail servers accept every address regardless of whether the mailbox exists, so verification returns catch-all for every candidate and the method produces no signal at all. There is no cheap fix, and the paid providers that used to offer their own deliverability judgement on these domains are a separate purchase decision rather than a free workaround. Our own documented position is to bank that tail as a preserved artifact and get volume from fresh sourcing instead, because sending to unverifiable addresses on shared sending infrastructure risks the deliverability of every other campaign on it.     People whose address does not follow a pattern. Not everyone's mailbox is derivable from their name and their employer's domain. Aliases, legacy domains from an acquisition, and companies that use a non-obvious convention all defeat the approach, and those rows are exactly what a paid finder is for.     Finding an address from a name, specifically

    The narrower version of this question, where you have a person's name and their employer and want their work address, has the same answer with one addition: the domain has to be right before anything else can be.

    A company's web address and its mail domain are not always the same string, and a marketing site on one domain with mail running on another is common enough to catch people out.
